My Encounter with Sports Photography
As a high school student, I used to think that becoming a "photographer" was an unreachable profession (at least it sounds like a pro job). Therefore, I only referred to myself as a school photography staff member (aka "the photography guy") at school. It wasn't until I started photographing in various school sports competitions that my juniors jokingly called me a "photographer," and I gradually accepted this title.
In our school, there were no classmates taking photos of athletes competing in the school sports events. To be honest, I wasn't someone who loved sports initially (at all! Imagine you have to hit the track every day), and I never thought I would get involved in the field of sports, let alone sports photography, during my high school years.
As mentioned earlier, because I was a member of the school photography club, I would participate whenever the school had events that required photography. One time, a basketball game that was supposed to take place at the school got canceled due to rain, but surprisingly, the rain stopped shortly after the announcement. I thought to myself, since I already had my camera with me, I would go to the with my friends (I got nowhere to go since my schedule was marked). It was from that moment that I embarked on my first journey of sports photography and started participating in the school's track and field association.
During my first sports photography session, I held a telephoto lens borrowed from a teacher (I have to say, the Sigma 150-600 felt like weight training, I should've trained my biceps so it wouldn't be sour haha). I suddenly realized how interesting sports photography could be. At the beginning of my encounter with sports photography, I wasn't very familiar with various parameters such as shutter speed, aperture settings, or which focusing mode to use. Over the next few days, while chatting with the chairperson of the Physical Education Panel (who he is also the Track and Field Team coach and my PE teacher), he suggested that I could consider photographing the athletes in their inter-school competitions. From then on, I began to join various school team's journeys in inter-school competitions, witnessing the growth of many athletes throughout the year with my camera.
Sports photography may seem like just taking a photo for athletes to post on social media, but for me, it is about capturing the records of struggle for the students in various school teams and the growth of a team. Even if not many athletes pay attention to my photography "work" (probably more like a hobby), I still hope that these photos can serve as evidence of everyone's growth and efforts throughout the year.
